LSI 2018 MegaRaid INQUIRY failed

Reported by: georgeherbert Owned by: somebody
Priority: major Milestone:
Component: all Version: 5.42
Keywords: megaraid linux needinfo Cc: george.herbert@…, ema29, jhlaird

Description

This is possibly related to tickets 46, 140, 197. I am prepared to provide followup and debugging info. Email on cc list is fastest way to get my attention.

Just compiled smartmontools 5.42 on CentOS 5.6, on a SuperMicro blade server with the LSI 2108 MegaRAID type raid controller.

[root@36d sbin]# ./smartctl -a -d megaraid,0 -T permissive /dev/sg0
smartctl 5.42 2011-10-20 r3458 [x86_64-linux-2.6.18-238.el5] (local build)
Copyright (C) 2002-11 by Bruce Allen, http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net

Smartctl open device: /dev/sg0 [megaraid_disk_00] failed: INQUIRY failed

I've tried megaraid,N for N=1 to 32; saw notes that some devices start enumerating at 8 and tried that additionally, iterated through with /dev/sg0 /dev/sg1. No good.

Not sure if this is an underlying bug or user error on my part, but I have tried everything I am aware of and have found on the net so far without success.

Additional info:

[root@36d sbin]# lsscsi -g
[0:2:0:0] disk LSI AOC-USAS2LP-H8iR 2.40 /dev/sda /dev/sg0
[0:2:1:0] disk LSI AOC-USAS2LP-H8iR 2.40 /dev/sdb /dev/sg1
[0:2:5:0] disk LSI AOC-USAS2LP-H8iR 2.40 /dev/sdg /dev/sg5

[root@36d sbin]# /opt/MegaRAID/MegaCli/MegaCli64 -AdpAllInfo -a0

Also having this issue with a 9260-16i. Adding myself to the CC list.

Failing here with Dell PERC H800 (9260 rev 05).
PERC 6/i (1078) in the same machine works fine.

comment:5 by jhlaird, 12 years ago

Whoops.

The device numbers on my 9260 start from 4:

# megacli -pdlist -a0 | grep Id
Device Id: 9
Device Id: 8
Device Id: 4
Device Id: 7
Device Id: 6
Device Id: 5

And using megaraid,4 et cetera works fine.

This could not be fixed soon without the help of a volunteer developer with access to affected hardware. Possibly related tickets: #26, #46, #140, #197.

Resolution: invalid
Status: newclosed

Its not a bug, but lack of documentation. MegaRaid numbering is strange and i already saw systems with first disk started from 11. We should just add megacli -pdlist -a0 to the FAQ.

Hi, i can provide you a root access to a computer with an LSI MegaRAID SAS 9240 or LSI MegaRAID SAS 9260. Lets me know if you will need one to debug the controller.

Same problem with the IDs here:

Controller : LSI MegaRAID SAS 9260-8i
Firmware : 12.12.0-0102

My drive ID starts by 8:

root@ubuntu:~# MegaCli -pdlist -a0 | grep Id
Device Id: 9
Device Id: 8

When i use ID 8 or 9 the smartctl works fine.

smartctl -s on -a -d megaraid,8 /dev/sda

Here a small script to get smart info:

DEVICE=/dev/sda
for i in $(MegaCli -pdlist -a0 | grep Id | cut -d":" -f2); do
    smartctl -s on -a -d megaraid,${i} ${DEVICE}
done

Can someone please update the smartctl Wiki an man page so that the user know how to find and use the right ID for those controller?

Thank you

Pawel
