JMicron JMS561 (152d:a561) Acasis EC-7252 in H/W RAID1 mode: -d jms56x fails with "No JMB39x response detected"

Description

Hello,

I have an Acasis EC-7252 2-bay USB enclosure with built-in hardware RAID, configured as RAID1. I would like to read the SMART data / status of the member drives, but none of the device types work.

Device

USB ID: 152d:a561 (JMicron JMS561, as far as I can tell)
Enclosure: ACASIS EC-7252
Driver: uas
Kernel: 6.17.13-2-pve (Proxmox)
smartctl: 7.5 2025-04-30 r5714 (local build)

udevadm info:

ID_MODEL=H_W_RAID1
ID_SERIAL=H_W_RAID1_D2J9SC9YR21HM0JS8NR4
ID_USB_MODEL=EC-7252
ID_USB_MODEL_ID=a561
ID_USB_VENDOR=ACASIS
ID_USB_VENDOR_ID=152d
ID_USB_DRIVER=uas

What I tried

1) -d usbjmicron,0:

Read Device Identity failed: scsi error unsupported field in scsi command

2) -d sat (and -x): works, but only reports the logical volume.

Device Model:     H/W RAID1
Serial Number:    D2J9SC9YR21HM0JS8NR4
Firmware Version: AX0C1Q
User Capacity: 500,061,700,096 bytes [500 GB]
Rotation Rate:    5400 rpm
SMART Status not supported: Incomplete response, ATA output registers missing
SMART overall-health self-assessment test result: PASSED
Warning: This result is based on an Attribute check.

No error log, self-test log, SCT, Device Statistics or GP logs are supported. The Log Directory only contains 0x00.

3) -d jms56x,0:

Smartctl open device: /dev/sda [jmb39x_disk_0] failed: No JMB39x response detected

Related tickets

The behavior looks the same as in #1674 (JMS562, "No JMB39x response detected") and #1451 (152d:0583 with -d jms56x,0). The jms56x support added in #1314 seems to work only with some firmware variants.

Question

Is it possible to support this chip/firmware (152d:a561), or is the RAID1 firmware simply not exposing the management interface? I can provide the full output of "lsusb -v -d 152d:a561", "smartctl -i -d sat" and any debug output (-r scsiioctl,2 or similar) if useful. I can also test patches or builds from builds.smartmontools.org.

Thanks.

Component: smartctl → all
Keywords: jmicron jmb39x jms56x added; JMS561 removed
Type: defect → enhancement

2) -d sat (and -x): works, but only reports the logical volume.

This is as expected.

3) -d jms56x,0:

Smartctl open device: /dev/sda [jmb39x_disk_0] failed: No JMB39x response detected

Please also try the other known variants of this protocol:
-d jmb39x,0, -d jmb39x-q,0, -d jmb39x-q2,0.
See man smartctl.

If none of these work, we need to wait for a volunteer who reverse engineers the protocol used by the vendor specific tool. JMicron never answers our requests for information.
