Description

Hello,

I just bought two WD Elements 18TB drives. I noticed they aren't already in the smartmontools database, so here you go :)

The disk is hot because it's currently doing an extended smart test.

This is possibly a new White Label WD drive. Interestingly a google search for "WD180EDGZ" finds only this ticket.

Yes, it is a White Label WD drive. I couldn't find any info on search engines or Reddit.
Once the extended test is finished, I'll remove the drive from the external case and take a picture of it.

Picture of the two disks.

WD180EDGZ
IU HA570
US7SAR180

so it seems to be an Ultrastar DC HC550

This WD180EDGZ is probably equivalent to the WD180EDFZ, which is only different by reporting 5,400 RPM as the spindle speed (both actually spin 7,200 RPM).

Is this a CMR or SMR disk? Any one know the endurance and buffer/cache size on this? I have this in my WD elements desktop hdd.

We won't know for sure since WD has not and will not likely ever publish datasheets, but consensus is that any WD over 6 TB (so, including this 18 TB device) is guranteed CMR. Meanwhile, the G in the model number suggests 512 MB 7,200 RPM performance.

comment:10 by Denis, 3 years ago

So if that is the case, what is the different between this drive and an WD Red Pro NAS 18TB? They both seem to have high MTBF, both have CMR, both have 7200rpm and 512MB Cache..? Am I missing something?

Also, when tested using crystal clear the Cache (on extra tests tab) seems to peak at about 200MB both on write and read tests, but infohw reports 0KB buffer.

That’s why I’m confused. Either way I thank you for all your fast speedy responses :)!

There’s no software to test and extra any of this info, right?

It's theorised that all drives of this capacity (including the Red and Internal Use families) are actually from the same production line (that for WD Ultrastars), and are binned into families based on characteristics. The worst of the drives are those that end up in Internal Use.

You can use audio acoustic profile to test for RPM (120 Hz = 7,200 RPM). We don't know cache because nothing in the firmware tells us, but the naming scheme hints at it.

I know this is an old report, but as an additional point of reference, a quick google on the code "us7sar180" that appears on the bottom of the drive reveals the datasheet:

https://documents.westerndigital.com/content/dam/doc-library/en_us/assets/public/western-digital/product/data-center-drives/ultrastar-dc-hc500-series/product-manual-ultrastar-dc-hc550-sata-oem-spec.pdf

Edit: this seems to confirm that the drive is 7200 RPM with 512 MB cache and 2.5 million hour MTBF.
