Component: smartctlall
Keywords: usb added
Milestone: undecided
Priority: majorminor

Contacted vendor and I was told that this adapter supports SATA pass-through command needed for smartctl

The output shows that USB bridge supports SAT ATA PASS-THROUGH, but the implementation is incomplete:

Model Family: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 (AF)
Device Model: ST1000DM003-9YN162
...
SMART Status not supported: Incomplete response, ATA output registers missing
...

This may also the case for NON DATA commands which are required to start a self-test. Please provide output of smartctl -r ioctl,2 -t short /dev/sda.

PLEASE do not use screen shots. PLEASE do not paste smartctl output unchanged to tickets. Use plain-text attachments or wiki markup instead.

Duration should be below 1 second. Either the ATA itself command times out or USB bridge firmware has problems with pass-through of NON DATA commands.

Did you try smartctl -t short with same disk on a regular SATA controller?

Last resort would be smartctl -d sat,12 -t short /dev/sda. If this does not work, there is nothing we could do.

I have no tried to run smartctl -t short on another sata controller..

Unfortunately when I ran the command the drive was dropped from the OS. Forcing me to reboot in order to have it back online. See output below:

Here is my output

pi@homer:~ $ sudo smartctl -d sat,12 -t short /dev/sda
smartctl 6.6 2017-11-05 r4594 [armv7l-linux-5.4.51-v7+] (local build)

Milestone: undecided

Possible bug in SAT layer of USB bridge in conjunction with ATA command SMART EXECUTE OFF-LINE IMMEDIATE. Cannot be fixed by smartmontools.
